WH 4th & 5th Grade Students Videoconference with Mrs. Barbara Bush

Submitted by bgrimes on Thu, 02/18/2010 - 3:25pm.

Recently the Education Department of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum presented Story Time featuring Mrs. Barbara Bush reading Mr. President, a Book of U.S. Presidents, and then answered students' questions.

Our 4th and 5th grade students were able to participate in this through our distance learning. We were excited to be one of the few schools selected to ask Mrs. Bush a question. A 5th grade student, Haley, asked the following question, "What inspired you to write the book and will you be writing more"?

Elementary Raises Money for Math-A-Thon

Submitted by bgrimes on Thu, 01/28/2010 - 9:22am.

West Hardin Elementary Students participated for the second year in a MATH-A-THON.  The MATH-A-THON began on November 18, 2009 and ended on December 4, 2009.  Students from Kindergarten through fifth grade joined in this event.  Thirty two West Hardin Elementary students participated in the MATH-A-THON.  Participants collected pledges from their sponsors and worked in their MATH-A-THON Funbook.  All proceeds from this event went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Students not only helped the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but each West Hardin student benefitted as well.  The MATH-A-THON problems they worked in the MATH-A-THON Funbook helped them enhance their math skills.  And the money they collected from their sponsors helped them lend a hand to others; giving them a sense of pride.

West Hardin Elementary is proud to announce that the students who participated in the MATH-A-THON raised $3, 982.25 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!!

Local businesses also got involved and supported this worthy cause.  They offered to match what the students raised, doubling the proceeds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The following West Hardin students participated in the MATH-A-THON.

 Zane A., Nathan V., Bradley T., MaCade C., Kaleigh W., Cross C., Jakoby H., Tilden W., Christopher J., Terry L., Carter K., James M.Ariana V., Makenna H., Brock N., Jake S., Rhiannon B., Dylan R.,  Thomas P., Will F., Matthew A., Josh W., Ashtyn R., Tyler M., Hannah J., Michael S., Kami S., Selah C., Shelby L., Jesse D., Garet K., Jesse A.

We are very proud of our students at West Hardin Elementary.  They showed dedication and compassion as they each strived to achieve their goal.  I am sure MATH-A-THON is most gracious for each student’s hard work and commitment.

CSCOPE Parent Portal

Submitted by bgrimes on Mon, 12/07/2009 - 1:55pm.

West Hardin teachers of Math, Science, English Language Arts, and Social Studies have been using the CSCOPE curriculum for the last 1 1/2 years. We have added the "Year at a Glance" to the Curriculum and Parent web site so parents can view what their child is learning each six weeks. CSCOPE has now added an online parent portal where parents can go to learn more about the components of CSCOPE. Currently, there are three videos (one each on vertical alignment, the Instructional Focus Document, and the 5 E model), helpful websites for parents in each content area, and access to the concepts and key understandings for every unit in each content area at each grade level (just click on the subject and grade level from the drop-down list). In the future, CSCOPE will be adding sections with frequently asked questions, additional videos, and other helpful information for parents.

To access this site, please go to www.cscope.us/parentportal. You can also find this link on our school web site under  (1) Resources, then Parents, then Web Links or under (2) Departments, then Curriculum, then Web Links.
